16 Week Doctor Appointment

dr tests

As you know, I have been worried about my weight gain (or lack of) and was anxious to talk with the doctor about it today.

Turns out I LOST more weight.. about 2 – 3 more pounds (but my scale at home and work have held steady…). Even after a weekend at the lakehouse! Ugh, it is really frustrating because I do feel like I’m eating all the time and I eat until I’m absolutely stuffed.

The nurse, after seeing my weight loss, asked me if I was having any bleeding. I was mad she would abruptly ask such a thing – obviously asking in regards to miscarriages or other issues. I said no.

The doctor came in and told me I must eat more.. more snacking all day long. I try, I really do! Apparently I’m not trying hard enough. When she was talking to me I almost started crying.. I felt so bad.

Who knew a baby the size of a gerbil was so much work! It’s certainly going to be an effort to eat MORE.

On the way home, I stopped at McDonald’s in an effort to pig out. I got a crispy chicken sandwich meal with Hi-C, but only made it through half the sandwich (and almost all the fries) before I was so stuffed I thought I’d die. I’d say my effort was unsuccessful and I failed :( I’ll try with *better* food tomorrow.

Anyway…

Uterus: measures perfectly for how far along I am, 16 weeks

Blood pressure: great at 120/59

Blood test: one tube taken this time.. if levels (of what I can’t remember) are high, an amniocentesis test may be suggested at my next visit to check for chromosomal abnormalities (either way, I don’t think I want an amnio)

My Questions:
When do I have to stop sleeping on my back?
In about a month, around week 20, it may start to be uncomfortable, but some women make it to week 30. Sleeping on your back can decrease blood circulation, shorten breath, cause pain… but just go by what is comfortable (same with sleeping on my stomach).

When am I not allowed to fly? (I am thinking of going to FL soon with my mom): I have a looong time to go. You can normally fly up to month 8.

Is it normal that I’m not feeling the baby frequently, as I’ve felt it before? Completely normal, nothing to worry about. It’s still early to be strongly feeling the baby so if I only notice it on occasion that’s ok. (phew)

And finally…

Heartbeat! still just as incredible as the first time. She found it right away this time… about 140 beats per minutes – good and strong! After a few seconds she loses it, but finds it again pretty quickly.. and the sound gets a little static in the middle… but it sounds good! Here it is:

Baby’s Heartbeat on July 7th, 2009

Ok, I’m off for some cuddle time on the couch with Steve ;) I put my 2 weeks notice in at work tomorrow!

man, I’m not pregnant but I wish I had that problem.

Good to hear everything else is going well. And I vote on skipping Florida and taking a trip out west for some fresh air.

  • I’m the COMPLETE opposite! I gained 10 lbs in the 1st month & now at 9 months I’ve gained 50 lbs all together. You’ll be ok just try & eat smaller portions more often instead of stuffing yourself in one sitting cuz that’ll just make you sick. Good luck & enjoy it now cuz I’m sure it won’t last, lol!
So cool that you have a recording of the heartbeat.

Hehehe…I’ve been watching “I was Pregnant and Didn’t Know It” tonight. They asked the question “A woman should eat twice as much to have a healthy baby, true or false?” The answer was actually — False, a woman only needs to eat 300 more calories than normal.
