Hospital birthing class #2

Ok. This class was better than the first session, but was still just a 2-hour power point lecture. Sadly, I have no funny one-liners from the 17 year old preggo this time. She did ask a lot of questions, some were still ridiculous, but none like before. (and blame preggo-brain, I can’t remember any that she asked… or maybe I just wasn’t listening).

Hubby got printed notes from the nurse and took notes, haha… but I believe it was only to keep from falling asleep.

OH what was annoying was that the computer stopped working near the end and the nurse said “oh well, we were basically done anyway.” Well, having the printed notes, we could see what we were missing and it was the stuff I most wanted to go over = labor positions, breathing and relaxation techniques, and support/massage. We asked, so she talked about some of the things sans power point slides, but I felt screwed on the deal.birth ball

I learned that I need (ok, want) a “birthing ball” better known as a yoga ball. Thanks to twitter friends for positive recommendations as well!

We talked about some policies:
*Only 3 people in the delivery room at a time (but they’re working to increase this andbirthing ball it may change by the time we get in there)
*No eating once you get to the hospital
*There is a mirror available so I can watch the delivery (yes, I want to.)
*Pictures/video can be taken at any time except while the baby is actually coming out (and that is OKAY with me!!)
*A photographer is available to come around after birth to take the first pictures of your lil one. I am all for this!

And about the 3 stages of labor and their phases. UGH. This was a bit scary. Like… I wanted to cry. I obviously have to go through it, I have no choice at this point – and I know I’ll survive – but still. Steve said it was scary stuff and I said– Yea?! For you?!

Next week (at the last class) we’re talking about pain control options and what happens postpartum.

I recently saw this list of what scares women most about labor…

1) I’ll need an episiotomy or I’ll tear. I’m not worried about this… my doctor won’t do an episiotomy and I’m already convinced I’ll tear so I’m prepared and ok with it.

2) I’ll have a bowel movement during labor. Again, I’m already convinced that I will and there’s nothing I can do about it. Steve is more worried about this one than I am, haha.

3) I’ll be steamrolled into unnecessary medical interventions. Again, not worried. I trust my doctor and I’m pretty adamant when I want something done a certain way (when it comes to our baby). My hubby knows my labor preferences too. (Besides that, I’m fairly laid back and know the doctors will do what they have to do for health and safety reasons).

4) I’ll have to have a c-section. I don’t want one, but I’m not worried I’ll have to have one. I know I’ll try my hardest to do this the natural way, but sometimes things just don’t work out. Like I said, I’m fairly laid back and if I NEED a c-section, shit happens.

5) I won’t make it to the hospital on time. Not a worry at all. It’s about a 20 minute drive, which means it’ll probably take my hubby 10 minutes when I’m actually in labor, haha. But the first stage of labor (which you’re supposed to spend at home anyway) can last from 6 – 12 hours… I think we can manage to make our way to the hospital before it’s too late.

6) I won’t be able to handle the pain. This one has obviously been on my mind. Not that I won’t be able to handle the pain, but that I may not be able to do it without an epidural. I don’t want an epidural, but I’m fully aware that labor may hit me like a shark attack and I’ll demand pain meds. I’m glad we’re going over the options at our class next week.

Try not to worry too much sweetie! I was a total chicken about an epidural and did not want one either. I did not have one with either one of our kids (but my husband says I begged for one after it was too late to get one, but whatever). LOL! I did not tear either, you would be amazed at how God gives our body such amazing abilities during childbirth — like the strength you hear some get during stress, like lifting cars up etc. Anyway– you are gonna do great :)

i think it’s mean that you are making fun of a 17 year old girl who is pregnant. she is obviously scared and is going through a much harder time than you. you’re married and having a baby. big deal, so are a million other women. you’re not high and mighty and you are no better than the poor girl you talk about. maybe instead of being condescending, you can give her some encouragement and advice. put your money where your mouth is, since according to your blog you know EVERYTHINGGGGGG. maybe you can share some of this with her.

That’s fine. Did you read my other blog post about my first class? The questions were funny — she just so happens to be 17 — and I tried to bring the humor to my blog. You don’t have to be here and read it if you don’t agree with it. It may not be for everyone, and that’s ok with me.

If you read my blog, ever, you’d know how many questions I actually ask, how scared I am, and how I don’t have a clue what’s going on. But if it appears that I know everything, I’ll take that as a compliment. Thanks, anonymous.
