4 weeks with baby Ryan

No, I don’t really plan on updating about Ryan every single week, but I believe we hit a huge milestone today and it just so happens to be 4 weeks since he was born!

HE FELL ASLEEP IN HIS BOUNCERALONEALL BY HIMSELF… and he’s doing it again RIGHT NOW.

Proof:

How adorable are his lil cheeks? :) Ryan is pretty much the same — can’t sleep alone and loves the milk. But today is giving me hope ;) Maybe tonight I’ll see if he can handle sleeping in his bassinet, at least for a couple hours… OH! last night he slept for 5 HOURS straight before waking up to eat!!

We’re getting better at learning what his cries mean… and that every cry doesn’t mean “GIMME MILK!” even if it will stop the crying anyway, haha.

Oh here’s something weird — we wouldn’t mind some answers on this one — sometimes near the end of a feeding he gets really… frustrated or fussy– quick, short sucks, big eyes darting around, a wriggling body and a moving head — which HURTS! Hurts so much I have to take him off. What’s the deal?! I try to talk to him to calm him down…

Hmm what else.. he’s getting smiley.. he had his first REAL bath in the Tummy Tub and he loved it!… I love when his little hairs are sticking out all over the place… I’ve never been more excited about hearing burps… and getting him to fall asleep (off the breast) is the best accomplishment of my life (yep, better than the masters degree.. better than getting published.. better than everything)… and watching Steve with Ryan is my new favorite thing to do – I hand off Ryan for some free time, but end up sitting there and just staring at them. :)

Some pics because they’re too cute:

Aww your son is adorable. I love pictures of sleeping babies, so precious! Sounds like my daughter, “can’t sleep alone and loves the milk”! A bouncer is the only way I could get my daughter to sleep alone too. We actually ended up getting a nicer vibrating bouncer that would zip down from the sitting up position to laying down, and that’s where she slept, next to my bed for the first couple months. She hated sleeping on her back, so it was the only thing that worked well because she would fall asleep sitting up and then I could zip it to the laying down position without moving her or waking her up! Tricky huh? ahh the memories LOL.

  • I think this is my first comment on your blog… I’m not sure when I started following, sometime before Ryan was born. I love hearing about your early days with the little guy and it makes me long to have those days again. (My son is 11 months old.) I’m really starting to feel the baby urge again. Aaah!!! Need to lose the weight from the first baby before starting a second! :)

Anyhow, I had a thought about your breastfeeding question. When my son acts like you describe I usually feel that it’s because he is getting full, but doesn’t want to stop nursing so he’s wiggling as he tries to squeeze an extra drop or two into his stomach. Not sure if that’s really what it is, but that’s what I thought it was with my kiddo. Good luck! Hopefully you can figure out what it is and get him to stop so he stops hurting you.

    Love the blog!

awwww what a cutie! i can’t wait to come see you all!! idk if you guys have a swing, but my mom swears it was the only thing that would consistently get me to pass out. and taking me outdoors would get me to stop crying…luckily i was a spring baby though. you’ll have to try that with ryan when it warms up.

I agree with the above, when my son does that it means he needs to be burped more or is just getting full! Actually come to think of it, he also does that when he is tired and wants to fall asleep but is enjoying nursing. Also I noticed you mentioned still leaking, I leaked (esp in bed) until about 6 – 7 weeks and then it was fine, once my milk really got regulated for lack of better word. I only leak now if he is crying REALLY hard and I can’t get to him or if we go too far past when he would normally be eating. I used to sleep on a towel :)

    He is a DOLL!

My son (who is 3 now) used to do that towards the end of his feedings too..I remember it being pretty short lived though. I chalked it up to the fact my milk supply wasn’t fully established. The great mysteries of motherhood, right? LOL…anyway, he’s gorgeous..enjoy him!

  • I had 2 babies who did the same thing and they were for opposite reasons. Alyce did it because she was really full but wanted to nurse still for the comfort.

Christiano did it because he is a little piggy and drains every drop, then still wants more and jerks his head around trying to get more out. This happens a lot during growth spurts. Ok, I should say it doesn’t happen as much now at 11 months, but he still does it every once in awhile and it’s not so comfy now that he has teeth. :)

  • Your little man is adorable. I can’t believe time has gone bye so fast. Anywhoo, my little man who’s about 3 weeks older does the same “pull away” thing and I feel your pain. When Murphy does it it is because he’s either got to stop and burp or he’s REALLY tired and is trying to stay awake to get that last bit of milk before dropping off to sleep. Hope this helps.

When my son starts being wriggly after nursing for a while from one breast, I’ve learned to switch him to the other breast because he’s drained the first one and still wants more. You can try doing that and seeing if it helps.
